Mercy in Hostility
Mercy is the way forward in hostility.
It's mercy that breaks down the categories and preconceptions of those with whom we disagree.
It's not by shouting at them or shaming them. It's by disagreeing with someone profoundly and yet loving them more deeply (and sacrificially) than they would expect that changes a heart or a mind.
That means we shouldn't be antagonizing or physically harming those who stand opposed to us. We should be bringing them food and water instead of assaults and insults.
This is how we fight for justice - by extending the sacrificial love we have received at the same time as we hold out the gospel's call for justice for the oppressed.
We don't break iron wills with iron words. We melt them with the heat of grace and truth.
